How does the music video for Titanium conform to or challenge the EDM genre?

Titanium, by David Guetta, is a music video that typically represents a supernatural boy who wakes up at the start of the video in a high school scene that seems to be destructed, which later on in the video is shown to be the boy that had caused this destruction. The video is mainly narrative and shows a very chronological type of music video. In this essay I will be discussing the similarities and differences of the music video to the EDM genre itself.

One challenge that the music video has to the EDM genre is that the storyline is about a main character who has caused a destruction and has telekinetic powers shown in the video, whereas the typical EDM genre theme is mainly about love and relationships as shown in ‘We Found Love’ by Rihanna along with Calvin Harris which is about a misleading relationship that includes a relationship that involves drugs and does not work out, which challenges Titanium as the storyline is not about love whereas other songs such as shown in the picture below are based on a relationship theme.

One conformity to Titanium and the EDM genre is that Titanium shares a very unique narrative idea, similar to the music video ‘Waiting for Love’ by Avicii which shows a very chronological story about the theme of love in the video. It is about a man who loses his wife when he leaves him for an unknown reason, and the video shows his sadness and then his journey to becoming happy again, which is similar to the way that Titanium is made, I the way that the story is narrative and shows a chronological storyline. Even though the themes have much to differ, neither show any sort of montage and both share a story which is a key part to the EDM genre.

In conclusion, both videos share the same type of narrative ideology, and both show clearly a storyline which is shared in the EDM genre. However Titanium has not got the same theme as most EDM songs which is love and shows more of a storyline about a central character. This shows that Titanium conforms and challenges the typical EDM genre type, making it a unique song in the genre itself.
